A recent project that we completed on our high pressure abrasive waterjet machine was this project that involved processing HY-100, as ballistic steel is commonly used in the defense industry.
This project was perfect for our large capacity waterjet, as the material was large sheets of armor plating that required multi-head waterjet cutting. The material seen here was 4.00" thick and used garnet abrasive to cut through the armor plating.
As you can see from the images, we were able to mirror the image given on the prints to nest the parts tightly to minimize waste and provide maximum usage of the material. Since this type of material can really get expensive, it was important to make the most of each sheet.
Fedtech also milled and machined these parts after they were waterjet cut to achieve the smooth edges and accurate angles as seen in step four.
