Waterjet Cutting 1.5" Thick Polymer Laminate
This month on the waterjet we found an interesting project. This challenge was to waterjet cut 1.5" thick GPO-3. This material is a fiberglass reinforced polymer laminate that is used for its flame resistance properties for electrical components.
Traditional means of processing this kind of material generally included bandsaw cutting, milling or drilling. But the material was so hard and thick that it would end up damaging these tools rather quickly.
Fortunately, waterjet cutting does a much better job without any of the drawbacks seen in traditional machining methods. This customer wisely chose to use waterjet cutting as their method for processing. This choice saved the customer from high production and material costs while still managing to provide high-quality finished pieces for this project.
